The reciprocating air compressor operates under the principle of positive displacement – it increases air pressure by reducing volume. These devices receive successive volumes of air confined in a closed space and significantly increase the pressure of this air. This work is accomplished by the action of the piston inside of the cylinder as the compressing and displacing device. At BOGE, we provide innovative compressor technology as a result of our high-quality design and manufacturing processes.
Reciprocating compressors are designed to be used intermittently and when a small amount of air is required. They are highly suitable for small businesses and construction work, workshops, homeowners, and do-it-yourself projects. Using a reciprocating air compressor may be the optimal choice over a rotary compressor if your compressor will likely remain idle for about 33% of the time. Rotary compressors may not function well after undergoing extended periods of downtime.
Single and double stage reciprocating compressors are available on the commercial market. Single stage compressors are utilized most often for output pressures ranging between 70 psig and 100 psig. Double stage compressors are often used with higher pressures ranging between 100 psig and 250 psig.
It is important to note that one 1 HP equates to 4 CFM at 100 psi, and reciprocating units typically handle 1 to 50 HP. Rotary screw and centrifugal compressors typically work with 100 HP and greater.
A single acting reciprocating air compressor performs the compression with the use of only one side of the piston. A double acting compressor uses both sides of the piston.
Load reduction is obtained as individual cylinders are unloaded. This is usually accomplished by the process of bypassing air (outside or within the compressor) or throttling the suction pressure. Capacity control is attained by modifying the speed in engine driven compressors through the control of fuel flow.
Reciprocating air compressors are available on the market as either water-cooled or air-cooled in lubricated and non-lubricated arrangements and are capable of a wide array of pressure and capacity settings.
